Montgomery Biscuits News Release
CHATTANOOGA, Ten. - The Biscuits (22-26) lost their first game in eight days and saw their season-high six-game winning streak come to an end on Friday night at AT&T Field in a 5-1 defeat to the Chattanooga Lookouts (29-19).
With Zach Lee, Friday's originally-slated starter, getting promoted to AAA Durham on Thursday, Sam McWilliams (0-1) was called up from A+ Charlotte and made his Double-A debut with the Biscuits in front of 3,407 in Chattanooga. McWilliams faced the minimum in the first, but ran into trouble in the second, serving up a one-out triple to Edgar Corcino. After a walk to Chris Paul, Alex Perez plated the first run of the game on a sac fly.
Brian Navarreto then swatted an RBI-double to put the Lookouts up, 2-0. McWilliams should have been out of the inning when Sean Miller grounded one to short, but Jermaine Palacios juggled the ball and Miller reached on an error to continue the inning. The next batter was Tanner English, and the center fielder smoked an RBI-single to make it a 3-0 game.
The Biscuits had an early opportunity against Chattanooga starter Omar Bencomo (4-0), loading the bases against the 29-year-old righty with one down in the top of the first. But Brett Sullivan then flew out, and David Rodriguez struck out to end the threat.
Bencomo at one point retired 11-consecutive batters, but the Biscuits finally cracked him in the sixth when Brandon Lowe went deep with an opposite-field homer over the left field wall to put Montgomery on the board at 4-1, after a fifth inning sac fly by Lookouts first baseman Zander Wiel.
The Biscuits loaded the bases again in the eighth with two outs against reliever Todd Van Steensel, but couldn't cash in as Rodriguez flew out to end the threat. Chattanooga scored their final run on a Rodriguez passed ball in the bottom of the eighth to put a halt to their five-game losing streak and the Biscuits six-game winning streak.
Montgomery will try to get back on track on Saturday night when the Biscuits bullpen takes on Anthony Marzi (0-2) at 6:15 PM CT.
The Biscuits will continue their current 10-game road trip until they return home to Montgomery on May 29 when the Jackson Generals will be in town for Wings Fest and the Gathering of Eagles Celebration. The series will also feature Country Music Night featuring a T-Shirt Giveaway presented by WLWI on Thursday, May 31, Gump in the Gump featuring Greenbow Biscuits Jersey Auction and MAX Fireworks on Friday, June 1, and Flight Night featuring a C-130 Figurine Giveaway presented by AUM and MAX Fireworks on Saturday, June 2.
