South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - A bases clearing incident in the seventh inning at Coveleski Stadium marks another sore spot for the South Bend Silver Hawks in their current five game losing streak. The latest setback was a 7-1 defeat to the Great Lakes Loons on Thursday night to drop the team's second half record to 5-9.
With a 5-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning, the Great Lakes Loons had Bobby Coyle at second base and Chris Jacobs at first with two outs. Michael Pericht doubled to left field to score Coyle easily. On the play, Jacobs was waved around third and plowed into catcher Ramon Castillo - ultimately knocking Castillo from the game. The throw home on the relay was high and Castillo was off his feet when Jacobs ran into him, whereas it appeared a simple slide would have scored him easily.
Jacobs' next at-bat was in the top of the seventh and Silver Hawks reliever Patrick Schuster (ND) hit him in the upper leg with the first pitch of the inning. Schuster was immediately ejected by home plate umpire Mike Patterson and Jacobs reacted aggressively resulting in the benches clearing. Cooler heads prevailed and no punches were thrown, but manager Mark Haley was ejected after the dust had settled for arguing with Patterson.
Lost in the scuffle on the night was a great outing by Loons' starter Ryan Christenson (WP, 7-5). The lefty went 8.1 innings and allowed just one run on six hits for his seventh win of the season.
South Bend starter Tyler Green (LP, 3-3) did not have nearly as much success. Green was roughed up for six runs - all earned - in 4.0 innings on the hill.
Jon Garcia hit a two run homer to lead Great Lakes, while Bobby Coyle had three hits and two RBIs as well.
South Bend was led by Gerson Montilla with two doubles and a run scored. Zach Walters had two singles and Yazy Arbelo provided the lone RBI with a single in the ninth.
The five game losing streak is the longest of the year for the Silver Hawks.
The Silver Hawks and Loons wrap up the three game set on a Fireworks Friday at 7:30 PM Eastern Time. RHP Mike Bolsinger (2-2, 2.27 ERA) will start for the Silver Hawks against LHP Greg Wilborn (0-0, 5.14 ERA) of the Loons.
