
Cougars Can't Hold Early Lead

APPLETON, Wisc. - After winning, 10-7, on Wednesday, the Kane County Cougars scored four runs in the top of the first inning on Thursday afternoon, but the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers battled back to beat the Cougars, 11-5, at Time Warner Cable Field. The Cougars' lead for first place over Wisconsin is back to one game, and the three-game series is even at one win apiece.
The Cougars loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning against Matt Miller and ended up with four runs. Angel Franco scored on a passed ball, Brian Fletcher nailed an RBI double, Jake Kuebler drove in a run and reached on an error and Kevin David brought home a teammate by grounding into a double play. But the Cougars did not score again until the eighth inning, and the Rattlers recovered against Leondy Perez.
Perez (2-9), who gave up seven runs in 4 2/3 innings in a loss in his last start, allowed a season-high nine runs on 13 hits in five innings in another defeat. The Rattlers sent seven hitters to the plate against him three different times, and Perez failed to record a strikeout for just the second time this season in 16 outings. Jon Keck gave up two runs in his 2 2/3 innings, and Nick Rogers retired the only batter he saw. David drove in Brett Eibner in the eighth against Stosh Wawrzasek for the 11-5 final. The two teams have combined for 33 runs on 54 hits in the two games.
The Cougars (9-5, 37-46) and Timber Rattlers (8-6, 46-38) wrap up the three-game series Friday night at 7:05 CT when Greg Billo (5-1, 1.49) takes on Maverick Lasker (0-1, 5.40). The game will be broadcast on WBIG 1280-AM and online via kccougars.com with pregame coverage starting at 6:50 p.m.
