LANSING, Mich. - The West Michigan Whitecaps (8-6, 40-43) used a five-run second inning to jump ahead of the Lansing Lugnuts (7-7, 45-36), and were able to hold on in the end, winning 8-5 on Thursday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.

It was only the Whitecaps' second victory in 11 meetings with Lansing and ended a nine-game losing streak.

Lugnuts starter John Anderson (Loss, 1-1) allowed the first three batters to reach in the second inning on a walk, a hit batsman and an infield single. The left-hander, who missed the 2010 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, collapsed in pain next to the mound while throwing his next pitch to Jeff Rowland, a run-scoring wild pitch that sailed to the backstop.

Sam Strickland entered the game for Lansing and gave up a two-run home run to Luis Castillo to cap off the scoring.

The Lugnuts scored four unanswered runs against Whitecaps starter Kevin Eichhorn (Win, 7-3), but the righty held the Lugnuts at bay after cutting the deficit to one.

The offense outhit West Michigan, 10-8, with Michael Crouse, Matt Nuzzo and former Michigan State Spartan Eli Boike each gathering two hits. Crouse homered in the second straight game and added a double, while Nuzzo and Boike each singled and doubled.

The difference was the Whitecaps' timely hitting, with Steve Moya going 2-for-3 with runners in scoring position (2-for-4 overall) and Castillo going 2-for-2 (2-for-5 overall) in run-scoring opportunities.

Lansing will start right-hander Marcus Walden (3-2, 3.89) in the 7:05 p.m. Friday rubber match of the series against West Michigan lefty Kyle Ryan (4-6, 3.72) on Salute to the Armed Forces Night as well as Detroit Tigers Night, with postgame LAFCU Fireworks.
