Bees Guenther Claims Oakley CHL POW
December 6, 2004 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
HIDALGO, TX: December 6, 2004 â The Central Hockey League announced their weekly league-wide honors today and awarded Killer Bees forward Joe Guenther the Oakley CHL Player of the Week honor.
Guenther (gun-ther) a 6'0" 215-pound Buffalo, New York native registered 3 goals and 4 assists for 7 points in the three games played by the Bees last week. His offensive charge began on November 27th, as he tied a career high with a three-point performance (1g,2a). He began last week's play by duplicating the performance Friday night in Corpus Christi by producing a goal and two assists for the three points and even dropped the gloves with former Indianapolis teammate Jason Baird to complete the "Gordie Howe Hat Trick." Saturday night, the Bees suffered their only loss on the weekend, but Guenther continued to deliver offensively, by producing a goal and an assist. He capped the weekend by assisting Bill Newson on the Bees only regulation goal and then scoring the game winning goal in the shootout for his first career overtime game winning goal. Guenther, who produces rap albums in the offseason, has collected either a goal or an assist in the last eight consecutive Bees goals (in regulation) and currently has a franchise high four-game goal scoring streak.
The award given to Guenther marks the first time a Killer Bee member has received an offensive honor. Jeff Levy and Jacque Vezina are previous award winners on the Bees squad, but they were for goaltending honors. Guenther, who was acquired via a three-way deal with Fort Worth and Topeka prior to the regular season, is currently second on the Bees squad offensively with 14 points off of 6 goals and 8 assists.
The 2004/2005 season is currently underway and the Bees are currently swarming throughout the Central Hockey League. The Bees return to action at the Dodge Arena Friday, December 10th as they host the Fort Worth Brahmas. Individual tickets are on sale now and may be obtained at any Dodge Arena ticket outlet, online (www.dodgearena.com) or over the phone at 866-RIO-TIXX.
