Bees Fall in Extras to Wisconsin in Series Finale

Appleton, WI. - The Burlington Bees (17-23) struggled once again on offense, as they fell 2-1 in extras innings, in the series finale against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (20-23). Gabe Friese (1-2) earned his first victory of the season, while Austin Krzeminski (1-2) suffers another loss in relief. After winning the opening game of the series 3-2 on Friday, the Bees managed just one run and seven hits in the final two games.

Bees struggle late

It was looking like the Bees were on their way to getting shut out in back to back games on Sunday afternoon. That is before Jo Adell stepped up to the plate with one out in the top of the sixth and hit his sixth homerun of the season, giving the Bees a 1-0. Luis Madero started the game well, going five innings, allowing just two hits and recording three strikeouts. Eduardo Del Rosario then came in relief for two innings, also allowing just two hits, and it was looking like Burlington was on their way to a shut-out victory.

However, things changed in the bottom of the eighth. Kida De La Cruz took over in the eighth, and gave up a one out single to Nick Roscetti, but managed to get Demi Orimoloye to pop up to second for the second out of the inning. Tristen Lutz stepped into the batter's box and on a 1-2 count drove in another run for the Timber Rattlers and tied the game 1-1.

In extras, the Bees managed to get their placed runner over to third but failed to score him for the second time this week. Wisconsin tried to get their placed runner Zack Clark over to third on a steal attempt but was thrown out. Nick Roscetti popped out to first, and it looked like Burlington was going to have a chance to bat in the eleventh. However, Orimoloye drew a walk, and Lutz singled to center to put a runner in scoring position. With the runners going a full count, Payton Henry got the job done on a single to right, and the Timber Rattlers celebrated with a walk-off win.

Wisconsin's pitching shines once again

The pitching by the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers was outstanding the whole series. Wisconsin's pitching surrendered just four runs on fourteen hits in the series, threw 12 walks, and recorded 25 strikeouts in 28 innings played. The bullpen of the Timber Rattlers was the difference maker in the series. Wisconsin's relief pitchers threw 12 innings in the series, allowing just one run on six hits, allowing just four walks, and throwing six strikeouts. Both wins were also earned by relief pitchers in the series.

Adell still a standout

Jo Adell has had himself a great week. Since May 13th, Adell has hit .407, hitting six home runs and driving in ten runs. However, since May 13th, the Bees have only scored 23 runs. If you do the math, Adell drove in nearly 44 percent of the teams runs. With Brandon Marsh now playing for the 66ers, the Bees need to find another big hitter to compliment Adell, that can hit the ball out of the ball park, and drive in runs. The Bees were just 1-20 with runners in scoring position in the series and need to find a way to drive in runs when the opportunity presents itself.

Looking ahead

Now suffering back to back series losses, the Bees will look to turn things around as they travel to Clinton Iowa, to take on the Class A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, the Clinton LumberKings. Clinton currently sits at 21-18 overall and are a half game back of the division Leading Peoria Chiefs. Starting pitchers are yet to be announced for the series, but the Bees will most likely go with Mitchell Traver, who started the day after Madero pitched last time. The Bees played two games against Clinton in mid-April but lost both and will be looking to get their first win against this club tomorrow at 6:30 pm central time.
