Lancaster Stormers News Release
A back and forth contest between the New Britain Bees and Lancaster Barnstormers ended in favor of the visitors taking an 8-7 decision Friday night at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
Kevin Munson (5-3) walked James Skelton with one out in the eighth inning. Darren Ford followed with a single into left, and Brock Stassi walked to fill the bases. A sacrifice fly by Deibinson Romero broke a 6-6 tie, and Jason Rogers added an insurance run with a lined single into center.
The lead proved to be more than the Barnstormers could overcome, although the club reached closer Evan Scribner in the ninth. Tyler Bortnick picked up a leadoff walk, moved to second on an infield out and scored on Ryan Casteel's single into center. Pinch runner Carlos Garcia immediately stole second and went to third when Darren Ford dropped a fly ball by K.C. Hobson to center, although Hobson was ruled out on the play. Josh Bell walked, but Scribner retired Trayvon Robinson on a grounder to first to end the night. Scribner earned his 14th save.
The Barnstormers had to rally from early adversity Friday night. A 95-minute rain delay occurred before the first pitch. When play finally began, Stormers' starter Nate Reed ran into trouble. Two walks and a single loaded the bases. Bell, a late insertion into the lineup at third, allowed a potential double play ball from Rogers to get past him, giving the Bees their first two runs. Jonathan Galvez stroked a one-out RBI single into right center to give the Bees a 3-0 lead A fourth run scored when Casteel made a high throw on a steal attempt by Galvez.
Lancaster responded with an equally efficient bottom half of the first. After the first two batters were retired, Lancaster's Blake Gailen hit a routine pop-up to Romero at third. Romero lost the ball for an error, allowing the inning to continue. Casteel roped his ninth homerun of the season to right, cutting the deficit in half. K.C. Hobson followed with a single, and Bell walked. Robinson lined a double to left center, scoring both runners, making the score 4-4 after the first.
Casteel gave Lancaster a 5-4 lead in the second with an RBI single to score Bortnick who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.
Doubles by Ford and Stassi tied the game in the fourth, but the Barnstormers responded immediately as Vladimir Frias launched a homer to right center, giving the Barnstormers a 6-5 lead.
New Britain tied the game on a bases loaded walk to Romero in the sixth.
The series continues Saturday night with New Britain righty Rainy Lara (6-4, 3.51 ERA) opposed by Lancaster's Brooks Hall (7-2, 4.27 ERA). Tickets can be purchased online or at the Two Dudes Box Office. Fans can also catch the action on the Lancaster Barnstormers' YouTube Channel, beginning at 6:15.
NOTES: Reed recorded seven strikeouts, bringing him within 12 of manager Ross Peeples' career record of 325...Casteel has homered in back-to-back games and has six RBI in the last three contests...Bortnick was hit for the 11th time this season...Lancaster stole three bases for a total of 165 on the year...Darian Sandford had two of the steals and now has 47 on the year, the second highest single season total in franchise history.
