Omaha Beef News Release
Omaha, NE - Before a crowd of 5,184 at the Omaha Civic Auditorium, the Omaha Beef professional indoor football team entered the history books Saturday evening with a 34-18 victory over the Sioux Falls Storm, ending the Storm's winning streak at an incomparable 40 games in-a-row.
Ironically, the Storm's streak began July 30, 2005, with a 51-41 win over the BEEF in the first round of the UIF playoffs. Over the course of the next 32 months and 972 days, Sioux Falls would go without a loss. Throughout the streak, the Storm won back-to-back-to-back United Bowl championships and would break the records for the most wins in-a-row by a professional football team and a professional sports franchise.
Several former local players stood out for the BEEF in the 34-18 win. Running back David Horne who attended Omaha Central High School and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln tallied 71 all-purpose yards and scored two rushing touchdowns. Wide receiver Blake Fuchtman, a native of Creighton, Nebraska and graduate of Midland Lutheran College in nearby Fremont, caught three passes for 30 yards and a touchdown. Wide receiver Javon Bell who attended Dana College in Blair, caught two passes for eight yards and a touchdown. Defensive back Diezeas Calbert, who attended Creighton Preparatory School, tallied seven tackles and intercepted Terrance Bryant twice. Defensive end Demoine Adams from the University fo Nebraska contributed a tackle and a pass break up. Kicker Ricky Lebeda, a graduate of Omaha Northwest High School and Dana College, made two field goals and all four extra points to contribute 10 points.
In the game against the Storm, the BEEF held the Storm to 18 points, which was the lowest output by Sioux Falls during their streak. Coincidentally, the point total was the second-lowest in team history. In addition, the BEEF held the Storm to their lowest point total of 14 on March 13, 2004. The two teams have now met 13 times in six years through being in the National Indoor Football League and the United Indoor Football Association.
The BEEF will look to extend their winning streak to two when they welcome the RiverCity Rage on "Mascot Night" Saturday evening. The first 2,000 kids will receive mascot hats as they pass through the turnstiles. Several local mascots are scheduled to appear. In addition, Miles from the Denver Broncos and Viktor the Viking from the Minnesota Vikings, will be making special appearances.
The Omaha Beef opened their 2008 home season versus the Bloomington Extreme on March 15, 2008. All home games will be played at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. The Beef are a member of the United Indoor Football Association, the premier indoor football league in America.
