Portland Beavers News Release

EDMONTON, Alberta -- A day after being eliminated from playoff contention, the Portland Beavers showed they're not ready to quit on the season.

The Beavers defeated the Edmonton Trappers 4-3 Saturday, leaving Portland in second place in the Pacific Coast League's North Division.

Khahil Greene, who had just three hits in 25 at bats prior to Saturday's game, exploded with a 3-for-5 performance, including a second-inning double.

Bobby Scales went 3-for-5 for the Beavers, his first three-hit game since being called up from Class AA Mobile August 20.

Matt Bruback, who joined Portland on August 22, earned his third straight win. He lasted five innings, allowing three runs on eight hits. Bruback (10-10) walked two and struck out two.

Brandon Villafuerte pitched a scoreless ninth inning to record his 12th save of the season.

Bruback was buoyed by Portland's offense, which scored three first-inning runs. First baseman Jon Knott led the charge, driving in Alex Fernandez and Scales with a two-out single. Later in the frame, Donaldo Mendez hit an RBI single to left field, scoring Knott from third.

Portland (69-73) added a run in the fourth on Greene's RBI single, but the Beavers offense was silent the rest of the way.

The Trappers (71-69) cut Portland's lead in half in the fourth, scoring two runs. Both Jake Thrower and Scott Sandusky hit RBI singles for Edmonton.

The Trappers tacked on a run in the fifth against Bruback, but weren't able to get any closer. Matt Cepicky drove in Edmonton's final tally with a homer over the right-field wall.

The Beavers scored all four of their runs against losing pitcher Sun Woo Kim, who worked five innings. Kim (10-8) allowed eight hits, walked one and fanned five.

NOTES: The Beavers added left-handed pitcher Alan Webb to the roster from Class AA Mobile ... Webb was 1-3 with a 3.30 ERA and two saves in 58 appearances with the BayBears ... the Beavers must win their final two games to avoid finishing with their worst record in three seasons.
