Sounds Fall To Isotopes, 13-2
August 30, 2003 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Nashville Sounds News Release
ALBUQUERQUE -- Sounds starting pitcher Jeff Bennett never had a chance to get into a groove on the hill at Isotopes Park on Saturday afternoon as playoff-hungry Albuquerque plated seven runs in the bottom of the first inning en route to a 13-2 victory over Nashville.
With the win, Albuquerque lowered its magic number to one to clinch the PCL's final playoff spot and a date with the Sounds next week.
The Isotopes' seven-run first featured a pair of two-run homers -- one by league home run leader Rob Stratton, his 32nd, and one by starting pitcher Jason Grilli, his first.
The Sounds, who were limited to only four hits on the afternoon, received the majority of their offense from the cleanup spot.
Adam Hyzdu went 2-for-2 with a single and a double before exiting early. J.J. Davis, who rejoined the Sounds today following a two-week stint in the big leagues, picked up hit hot hitting against PCL pitching right where he left off, doubling in the seventh inning in his first at-bat after replacing Hyzdu, and later scored Nashville's first run of the contest.
Jorge Toca recorded the Sounds' other hit and scored the club's second run of the contest later in the frame. Bobby Hill and Aaron Holbert each plated a run with an RBI grounder.
Grilli (6-2) allowed a pair of runs over seven innings of work to pick up the victory, while Bennett (1-3) suffered the loss.
The teams continue their series with a 7:05 p.m. CDT meeting on Sunday. The Sounds have yet to name their starter for the contest. Albuquerque will send right-hander Justin Wayne (4-11, 3.93) to the hill.
