Beavers Lose Series Finale to River Cats

PORTLAND, Ore. - Mike Lockwood hit two home runs to lead the Sacramento River Cats to a 3-1 win Friday night over the Portland Beavers in front of 7,915 at PGE Park.

The Beavers lost three-of-four to the River Cats, the first-place team in the Pacific Coast League's South Division.

Chris Enochs, who relieved starter Ed Yarnall in the third inning, picked up the win for the River Cats. The right-hander held Portland scoreless for three frames, giving up four hits and striking out four.

Justin Lehr, the fifth pitcher of the night for Sacramento, threw 1.1 scoreless innings to earn his second save.

Mike Bynum allowed just two runs in six innings, but lost for the seventh time in eight starts. Bynum (5-9) gave up six hits, walked three and fanned nien.

The Beavers (56-58) left a season-high 14 men on base, including 11 through the game's first five innings. In the fourth, Portland loaded the bases with no one out, but Enochs struck out Khalil Greene, Tagg Bozied, and Jason Bay to end the threat.

Sacramento (70-44) got on the board first, scoring a fifth-inning run on Lockwood's first homer, a towering shot to right field. An inning later, the River Cats scored again, this time on an RBI double by Graham Koonce.

Lockwood struck again in the seventh, giving Sacramento a 3-0 lead with his second home run, an opposite-field shot over the left-field wall.

The Beavers finally broke through in the seventh when Rich Gomez hit a bloop single to center, scoring Bay from third.

Bernie Castro, Yamid Haad and Gomez each went had two hits to lead Portland.

NOTES: As a team, the Beavers batted .258 with 30 home runs in July ... Portland hit a franchise-high .305 during the month of June ... in three seasons, the Beavers are 15-17 vs. Sacramento.
