Nashville Sounds News Release

The Pittsburgh Pirates purchased the contract of Sounds closer Mark Corey this morning, the fourth Nashville player to be promoted to the big leagues in the past week.

Corey will join recent Sounds call-ups Duaner Sanchez and Tike Redman in Pittsburgh for the Bucs' game against Colorado tonight.

The fourth Sound to be promoted -- reliever Jim Mann -- was designated for assignment today to make room on the Pirates' 40-man roster for Corey.

Corey leads the Pacific Coast League and ranks second in the minors with 30 saves this season. He posted a 1-3 record and 4.34 ERA in a team-leading 46 relief outings for Nashville.

The 28-year-old hurler, who grew up in central Pennsylvania, has previously logged big-league service time with the New York Mets and Colorado Rockies in his nine-year pro career. He is 0-3 with a 9.13 ERA (24er/23.3ip) in 28 lifetime major-league appearances, all in relief.

Mann, who will have to clear waivers to rejoin the Sounds for their division title run, made two appearances for Pittsburgh and allowed four runs (two earned) in 1 2/3 innings.

The Sounds filled Corey's roster spot with infield prospect Freddy Sanchez, who the Pirates acquired from Boston on Thursday. The 25-year-old Sanchez has spent time with the Red Sox and their Triple-A affiliate in Pawtucket this season.

Sanchez, who was rated as Boston's #4 prospect by Baseball America entering this season, batted .341 (72-for-211) with 17 doubles, five home runs and 25 RBI in 58 games with Pawtucket, making 35 appearances at shortstop and 21 at second base. He began the season at Triple-A and was leading the International League in hitting (.384) when he was recalled by the Red Sox on 5/30. In 20 games with Boston, Freddy went 8-for-34 (.235) with two doubles and two RBI. He was optioned back to Triple-A on 7/17.

Left-handed reliever Mike Gonzalez, who was re-acquired from Boston along with Sanchez on Thursday, will take over the closer role for Nashville. He has logged three save in his last four Triple-A appearance (including one in last night's 4-2 Sounds win over Albuquerque). Gonzalez has yet to allow a run in nine Triple-A relief outings this season.
