Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Jack Cust belted two home runs, Oscar Robles tripled twice and had three RBIs, and Luis Cruz had three doubles as the Portland Beavers racked up 19 hits - 13 of them for extra bases - in a 17-3 rout over the Sacramento River Cats Friday night at PGE Park.
When the dust settled, Portland (7-9) set seven-year franchise records (since the team returned to the PCL in 2001) for runs (17) and runs in a home victory, while matching records for doubles (8), triples (3) and RBIs (16). Individually, Oscar Robles matched a seven-year high with two triples and Cruz matched the record for doubles in a game.
Brian Myrow, activated from the disabled list prior to the game, tripled and had three RBIs in his debut with the Beavers, who were 5-3 in their season-opening homestand.
Cust extended his hitting streak to nine games and finished with six home runs during the opening homestand. Luke Carlin doubled twice, walked twice, drove in two and scored three times for the Beavers, who got at least one hit from all nine starters and a run from all but one starter.
Craig Stansberry added three hits and three runs scored for Portland.
Not to be overlooked, Jack Cassel (1-2) earned his first win on the strength of his best start of the year, striking out six and giving up two runs (1 earned) in five innings.
Jason Windsor (1-2) took the brunt of the damage, yielding nine runs and 11 hits in just two innings for the River Cats (10-6).
The Beavers scored at least one run in innings two through six. The highlight came in the six-run third, when Portland sent 11 batters to the plate and got a solo homer from Cust, an RBI double from Carlin, and two-run triple from Myrow and a run-scoring double from Cruz, who scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch.
Carlin, Cruz and Robles drove in additional runs in the fourth for a commanding 12-2 lead.
The Beavers begin a four-game series at Colorado Springs Saturday night. First pitch is 4:05 p.m. (Pacific).
NOTES: Before the game, the Beavers traded infielder Manny Alexander to the Washington Nationals and reinstated Myrow and right-handed pitcher Steve Watkins from the disabled list. Watkins, who played for Portland in 2003-04, pitched two innings Friday night ... Cust has six multi-homer games in two seasons with Portland ... the River Cats brought in catcher David Castillo to pitch the seventh and eighth innings ... seven Beavers logged multi-hit games, while six had two or more RBIs.
