Beavers announce roster moves

PORTLAND, Ore. - The San Diego Padres today placed right-handed pitcher Chris Young and catcher Josh Bard on the 15-day disabled list, recalled Portland right-handed pitchers Josh Banks and Jared Wells, purchased the contract of Portland right-handed pitcher Mike Adams and optioned left-handed pitcher Joe Thatcher to Portland.

Additionally, the Padres designated right-handed pitcher Justin Germano for assignment and recalled catcher Colt Morton from Class AA San Antonio.

Adams, 29, is 3-1 with a 5.52 ERA (9er, 14.2ip) and 16 strikeouts in 12 relief appearances for Portland this season. In two seasons with the Beavers (2006, 2008), he is 3-3 with a 4.70 ERA in 29 games. In parts of three seasons with Milwaukee (2004-06), Adams has a career 2-4 record, a 3.54 ERA and one save in 61 outings at the major league level.

Banks, 25, is 1-1 with a 6.66 ERA (18er, 24.1ip) and 19 strikeouts in eight appearances (3 starts) with the Beavers after being claimed off waivers from Toronto and optioned to Portland on April 23. Banks made his major league debut with the Blue Jays last season, posting no record and a 7.36 ERA (6er, 7.1ip) in three appearances (1 start).

Wells, 26, is 1-1 with nine saves and a 5.85 ERA (13er, 20.0ip) in 19 relief appearances for Portland this season. In parts of three seasons with the Beavers (2006-08), Wells is 6-17 with a 6.11 ERA and 18 saves in 81 appearances (25 starts). Wells has yet to pitch in the major leagues.

Thatcher, 26, has a 9.00 ERA (2er, 2.0ip) with four strikeouts and one walk in two relief appearances with Portland this season. The left-hander is 0-4 with a 7.45 ERA (16er, 19.1ip), 14 strikeouts and nine walks in 17 relief appearances over his two stints with the Padres in 2008.

Young was placed on the disabled list with a nasal fracture and laceration to his nose. Bard was placed on the disabled list with a left ankle sprain; both injuries were sustained in the third inning of last night's game against St. Louis.
