Worcester Tornadoes News Release

The Newark Bears scored three times in the fifth after taking a one-run lead in the fourth, beating the Tornadoes 6-2 on Monday night at Hanover Insurance Ballpark at Fitton Field. Former Worcester outfielder Danny Santiesteban drove in an insurance run, scored another, and made a dazzling running catch in the Bears' victory.

Kyle LaMotta had a two-run homer as the second batter of the game, but Worcester answered back with a pair in the bottom half of the inning. Nick Salotti and Alex Fernandez each scored, with Boomer Blanchard knocking Nick in with a single, and Ryan Crespi plating Alex with a fielder's choice.

In the fourth, Paddy Matera's sacrifice fly put the Bears up for good. Former Major Leaguers Tim Raines, Jr. and Daryle Ward each scored before Santiesteban tallied the final Newark run in a three-spot fifth.

Shawn Gilblair fell to (0-2) with the loss, going four plus innings, striking out one batter, walking two, and allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits. Aaron Kalb pitched seven innings for the win, limiting the Tornadoes to five hits and two runs, while striking out four and walking two. Kyle Morrison pitched two scoreless innings to finish Worcester off and earn a save.

Ryan Walfield threw three scoreless innings out of the pen for the Tornadoes, getting seven groundball outs and giving up just two hits. Albert Ayala came on for a three-strikeout eighth, walking two batters in the process. Rick Asadoorian pitched a perfect ninth for Worcester with a strikeout.

Game two of the three game set will be on Tuesday, with another 7:05pm first pitch. (Wednesday's game will be the same start time as well.)
