Newark Bears News Release
WORCESTER, MA. (June 13, 2011) - Former Rutgers University hurler Aaron Kalb pitched seven solid innings, scattering five hits, striking out four and walking two, and Kyle LaMotta belted a two-run homer, leading the Newark Bears to a 6-2 victory over the Worcester Tornadoes Monday night.
The win enabled the Bears to improve their record to 12-6 overall with their 10th win in their last 12 games. The Bears sit one game behind Quebec for first place in the Can-Am League. Worcester dropped to 6-11 overall.
Kalb, a native of Middletown, NJ, was strong in his second start with the Bears, improving to 1-1. He gave way in the eighth to fellow New Jersey native Kyle Morrison (Middlesex, NJ), who pitched the final two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two.
The Bears gained a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, when LaMotta lifted his second homer of the season over the wall, a two-run shot.
Worcester then tied the game with two runs in the home second on a RBI single by Boomer Blanchard and a run-scoring fielder's choice from Ryan Crespi.
The Bears then took the lead for good on Paddy Matera's sacrifice fly in the fourth inning, then broke the game open with three runs in the top of the fifth. One run scored on Danny Santiesteban's RBI single and two more scored on an error. Santiesteban was the lone Newark player with more than one hit, collecting two singles.
The Bears' bullpen then shut the door, giving Newark the win. It enabled the Bears to give closer Mikey Mehlich the night off on the day that Mehlich was selected as the Pointstreak Can-Am League Pitcher of the Week, selected by Pointstreak, the official statistician of the Can-Am League.
Mehlich had three saves in five appearances last week, not allowing a run while giving up two hits, two walks and striking out three. Mehlich currently ranks second in the league in saves with four.
The Bears continue their successful road trip with two more games with the Tornadoes in Worcester Tuesday and Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. The Bears return home Friday night at 5:35 p.m., taking on the Brockton Rox.
