New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, N.J. - Jeremy Slayden and Chris White homered, but the Pittsfield Colonials took advantage of several New Jersey Jackals' miscues en route to a 6-4 win over New Jersey in the opener of a four-game series on a cool Monday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.
In the two-run victory, the Colonials plated a pair of unearned runs courtesy of a pair of New Jersey errors and four passed balls by catcher Myron Leslie.
With Chris Vasami on the mound for New Jersey, Pittsfield took advantage of several first-inning miscues by the Jackals. With two outs, Jerod Edmondson drew a walk, advanced to second on an error by first baseman Kris Sanchez on a pickoff, moved to third on a passed ball, and scored on an infield single off the bat of Angel Molina to give the Colonials a 1-0 lead. Molina scored on a Billy Mottram triple to make it 2-0 before Mottram scampered home on the Jackals' second passed ball of the inning to extend the Pittsfield advantage to 3-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Jackals finally broke through against Colonials' starter Patrick Moran. After Slayden launched a solo home run to right field, Nick Giarraputo doubled to left and scored when White deposited a single to right just out of the reach of a diving Jerod Edmondson to pull the Jackals within one at 3-2.
However, the Colonials quickly got those two runs back in the top of the fifth when Danny Bomback unloaded a two-run homer, his first of the season, to right field following a Quentin Davis walk to make it 5-2 Pittsfield.
The Jackals countered in the bottom of the fifth when Mike Jones ripped an RBI triple into the right field bullpen to pull New Jersey within two, but Pittsfield re-gained a three-run lead with a run in the top of the sixth on the Jackals' third passed ball of the contest.
White's second home run of the season, a two-out blast onto the hill in right field with the bases empty in the sixth inning, cut the Jackals' deficit to 6-4, but from there the Colonials bullpen retired 10 of the final 11 batters of the game to secure the Pittsfield victory.
Moran (2-1) earned the win in his first outing in nine days, allowing four runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings. Colonials' relievers Mike Zenko, Rafael Lluberes, and Matt Lyons combined 3 1/3 scoreless frames with Lyons notching his second save of the season despite yielding a two-out double to Argenis Reyes in the ninth. Vasami (1-2) absorbed the loss for New Jersey after surrendering five runs (four earned) on five hits over five frames. In the loss, the Jackals' bullpen allowed just one unearned run over four innings.
The Jackals and Colonials play the second contest of their four-game series on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. at Yogi Berra Stadium when New Jersey sends right-hander Phil Bartleski (1-0, 7.15 ERA) to the mound against Pittsfield southpaw Dave Qualben (1-0, 3.38 ERA).
