BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Dec. 4, 2011) - Trevor Frischmon scored twice for the Sound Tigers, but a controversial no-goal call in the final minute of play preserved a victory for Hershey as the Bears held on for a 3-2 win over Bridgeport on Sunday afternoon. Hershey improves to 12-6-3-2 with the win. The Sound Tigers fall to 11-9-3-1 with the loss.
The Sound Tigers opened the scoring late in the first period when Frischmon beat Braden Holtby from the slot for his second goal of the season with 2:45 left in the opening frame. Frischmon's goal sent a wave of teddy bears and stuffed animals onto the ice as part of the Sound Tigers annual Teddy Bear Toss. The hundreds of bears which fans threw onto the ice will be donated by Sound Tigers players to local area hospitals and charities during the holiday season.
The Bears answered the Sound Tigers opening period with three goals in the second period to take control of the game. Keith Aucoin scored his first goal of the game when he buried a rebound from the left circle past Kevin Poulin to even the score at one 2:50 into the second period. Aucoin netted his second tally of the game just 1:59 later. The veteran forward intercepted a cross-ice pass in the Hershey zone during a Sound Tigers power play, skated in all alone on Poulin and backhanded the puck over the second-year netminder to give Hershey a 2-1 lead. The Bears increased their lead to two with 5:39 remaining in the middle frame when Jacob Micflikier converted on a feed from Ryan Potulny for his ninth goal of the season.
The Sound Tigers drew within a goal with 1:01 left in regulation. Steve Oleksy's point shot was deflected on goal by Tim Wallace, and Frischmon found the rebound for his second goal of the game to bring the Sound Tigers within one. Bridgeport appeared to tie the game at three with 14.2 left in regulation when Justin DiBenedetto jammed a rebound past Holtby. However, the referees deemed that Holtby had frozen the puck before DiBenedetto had netted what would have been the game-tying goal.
Kevin Poulin made 26 saves in the loss for the Sound Tigers. Braden Holtby recorded 34 saves to earn his seventh win of the season. The Sound Tigers power play was unable to convert on its chances down the stretch and went 0-for-8 in the game.
The Sound Tigers return to action Saturday, Dec. 10 when they host the Portland Pirates at 7:00 p.m.
