
Bears feast on Patriots with 9-4 victory

Bridgewater, NJ- The Newark Bears defeated the Somerset Patriots 9-4 before 5,148 fans at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Wednesday evening to hand the Patriots their fourth straight loss.
Newark took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Left fielder Rickey Henderson walked, shortstop Jerson Perez singled, and first baseman Chris Jones followed with an RBI single. Third baseman Jose Olmeda doubled home Perez and Jones.
The Bears added three runs in the top of the third inning. Right fielder Keith Maxwell and second baseman Jack Joffrion drew walks and catcher Jason Dewey followed with a three-run home run (3) to center field to give Newark a 6-0 lead.
Newark extended the lead with a solo home run by Jones (8) to make the score 7-0 in the top of the fourth inning.
Somerset got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning. Left fielder Tony Gsell walked and scored on a two-run home run by center fielder Norm Hutchins (5) to cut the lead to 7-2.
The Bears answered with a run in the top of the seventh inning. Perez drew a walk, stole second, and scored on a throwing error by Patriots catcher Manny Santana to extend the lead to 8-2.
The Patriots added another run in the bottom of the eighth inning on an RBI single by third baseman Jeff Nettles to make the score 8-3.
The Bears scored again on Jones' second home run (9) of the evening in the top of the ninth inning.
Hutchins hit his second home run (6) of the game in the bottom of the ninth inning for the 9-4 final.
Newark starter Brent Billingsley (4-0) picked up the win, allowing three earned runs on four hits in 7.1 innings pitched. Patriots starter Jason Shelley (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing seven earned runs on six hits and six walks in four innings pitched.
The 2004 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home with a 7:05 pm game against the Newark Bears on Thursday evening. Thursday evening includes a Post Game Fireworks Extravaganza presented by Gotta Dance.
