Brockton Rox News Release

(Newark, N.J. - June 19, 2011) - The Newark Bears (14-9) edged the Brockton Rox (14-9) 8-7 on Fathers Day afternoon with a game-winning single by Paddy Matera in the bottom of the ninth to pull even at second place in the Can-Am League standings.

Newark built a 5-1 lead against Freddy Flores through the first five frames, with most of the offense provided by Tim Raines Jr. and Daryle Ward hitting back-to-back in the lineup

Raines Jr. went 3-for-4 with three doubles and three runs scored, while Ward contributed a 3-for-4 performance as well, driving in four.

After scoring a run on a throwing error in the top of the second, the Rox bats remained dormant before coming all the way back to tie the game in the sixth.

Keith Brachold hit a two run homer as five of the first six batters reached base, chasing Bears starter Victor Gonzalez. Anthony Plutaentered with the bases loaded and promptly walked the next two batters, tying the game at five.

Gonzalez pitched pretty well in the no decision but was let down by his defense, giving up five runs (two earned) on six hits in five and 2/3.

The teams traded runs in the seventh and eighth frames, before Kyle Morrison (1-0) quieted the Rox bats in the top of the ninth.

After a rough outing on Friday night, Colin Lynch (0-3) took the mound for Brockton in the bottom half of the frame, hoping for better results against the potent Newark offense.

The Bears rally began with one out, when Lynch beaned Burt Reynolds, followed by Reynolds' swipe of second base. Three batters later, Materastepped to the plate and delivered a walkoff single, plating Reynolds and giving the Bears an 8-7 victory.

The roadtrip continues Monday as the Rox open a three game series with the Boulders at Provident Bank Park. First pitch for game one is set for 7:05 p.m.
