New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, N.J. - After the traveling New York Federals snuck past the New Jersey Jackals for a 3-2 win in the first game of a doubleheader, New Jersey returned the favor in the nightcap as skipper Joe Calfapietra notched his 400th regular-season win with New Jersey behind the strength of a 6-4 victory on Monday at Yogi Berra Stadium.
In game one, the Federals took advantage of a first-inning Jackals' error as they plated three runs in the frame against A.J. Wideman and never looked back en route to a 3-2 victory.
With two aboard and one out in the first, Federals' right fielder Tom Maloney's single to left squirted past Jeremy Slayden, allowing two runs to score and Maloney to scamper to third. The next batter, Robert Dyer, poked an RBI single to extend the Federals' lead to 3-0. Following that single, Wideman allowed just one hit the rest of the contest in his first start since June 4. Two of the three runs in the first inning were unearned.
New Jersey pushed across a pair of runs in the fourth inning on a Mike DeJesus leadoff double, a one-out RBI single off the bat of Myron Leslie, and a run-scoring double play to cut their deficit to 3-2. In the bottom of the seventh, Slayden led off with a double off the top of the right field wall and the Jackals used a pair of walks to load the bases, but reliever Kent Worthington struck out DeJesus looking to end the threat.
Wideman (0-3) took the loss despite tossing all seven innings and allowing one earned run on five hits. New York starter Will Hassett (1-2) threw six strong innings to pick up his first win while Worthington notched his first save of the season.
In the nightcap, the Jackals rallied back from a 2-0 deficit in the fourth inning to salvage the split of the doubleheader, winning the contest 6-4 behind starter Isaac Pavlik's third consecutive complete game effort.
Trailing 2-0 in the fourth inning, the Jackals strung together four straight two-out hits to push three runs across and take their first lead of the day. After New York starter Mike Streaman had retired nine consecutive batters, Myron Leslie lined his fourth homer of the season over the right field wall to get the Jackals on the board. Mike Jones and Nick Giarraputo followed with singles before Kris Sanchez pulled a two-run double into right field to give New Jersey a 3-2 advantage.
The Jackals tacked on three more runs in the sixth when Leonard Davis doubled and eventually scored on a Leslie sacrifice fly before Nick Giarraputo blasted his fourth home run of the season to make it a 6-2 game.
New York's Eddie Lantigua smashed a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to pull the Federals' within two, but Pavlik shut the door to pick up his league-leading fifth win of the year.
The Jackals and Colonials play the middle contest of their five-game series on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. when New Jersey sends southpaw James Leverton (2-2, 4.03 ERA) to the mound against New York right-hander James Kukucka (1-0, 3.94 ERA). Cody Chrusciel and Matt Sutor have the call on the live Jackals webcast beginning 15 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com
