Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, N.J. (June 20, 2011) - Kyle LaMotta singled up the middle with two outs in the ninth inning, scoring Burt Reynolds with the game-winning run, as the Newark Bears won in walk-off fashion for the second straight game, this time taking a 4-3 decision over the Worcester Tornadoes Monday night at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
The win enabled the Bears to move to 15-9 on the season, while Worcester dropped to 8-15.
The game-winning rally started when Reynolds doubled with one out. Billy Alvino was intentionally walked and after Todd Gossage grounded out to second, LaMotta laced a 2-1 fastball from losing pitcher Albert Ayala (0-2) up the middle, easily scoring Reynolds from third base.
It was the second straight game that Newark's own Reynolds scored the game-winning run.
The rally made a winning pitcher of Andrew Pluta (2-2), who pitched 2/3 of an inning to earn the win. Bears relievers Chris Rollins, Matt Fitton (making his professional debut) and Pluta held Worcester scoreless over the final three innings.
The Bears took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, when Todd Gossage delivered a two-run double to right field, scoring Burt Reynolds and Billy Alvino.
The Tornadoes drew to within 2-1 in the top of the third, when Ryan Crespi walked and came around to score on a bases loaded walk to Mark Minicozzi.
The two starting pitchers settled down for a few innings, until the top of the sixth, when Nick Salotti and Anthony Sosnoskie reached Bears starter Aaron Kalb for back-to-back solo homers, giving the Tornadoes a 3-2 lead.
The Bears countered with one run in the sixth, tying the game at 3-3. Tim Raines, Jr. doubled, his fourth double in as many games, and came around to score on Daryle Ward's RBI single to left.
The Bears and Tornadoes continue their four-game series Tuesday night at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium, with game time slated for 7:05 p.m.
