Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums(9-7) came back from an early three-run deficit to beat the Schaumburg Boomers(11-5), 4-3 in 10 innings.
The Boomers got the game started quickly when, with the bases loaded, Sean Godfrey hit an infield RBI single to give them an early 1-0 lead. Kenny Towns followed with an RBI sacrifice fly. In the second, James Keller led off with a solo homer to left, giving Schaumburg a lead of three. From there the Beach Bums pitching staff settled down to give them a chance to come back.
Nick Murphy led off the third with a double into left field then moved to third on a Jeff DeBlieux fly out. Arby Fields stepped up and lifted a single into center, scoring Murphy to put the Beach Bums on the board. From there, both teams were scoreless until the seventh.
After the stretch, Ginacarlo Brugnoni doubled to center with one out. Murphy followed with a walk then DeBlieux doubled to drive in Brugnoni to bring Traverse City within one. Fields then walked and, after a pitching change, Steven Patterson hit a fly ball down the right field line. It was deep enough for Murphy to score on the sacrifice to tie the game at three apiece.
The Beach Bums threatened in the ninth, putting runners on the corners with two away, but couldn't score. Schaumburg would get runners on first and second with two out in the top of the 10th and also couldn't convert. In the bottom of the inning, Elijah Trail led off with a walk then stole second. Two batters later, Brugnoni singled up the middle, Elijah scored from second and the Beach Bums celebrated their first walk-off victory of the season.
After John Havird gave up three runs in the first two innings, he settled down to go five for a no-decision. Devin Over, Enrique Oquendo, Jacob Lanning, and Jake Ezell, went the rest of the way, allowing just two more hits. Ezell got the win to go to 1-0. Jake Joyce is dealt the loss to drop to 1-1.
