TRAVERSE CITY, Mich.-- A former seventh-round pick of the Cleveland Indians in the 2006 Major League Baseball Draft, catcher Robby Alcombrack, has signed with the Traverse City Beach Bums for the 2009 season.
"We are excited to pick up a prospect of Robert's caliber this close to training camp," said Beach Bums director of baseball operations Jason Wuerfel. "He has a lot of pop in his bat and brings three years of professional experience to the table even though he is still just 20-years old. As a highly touted prospect out of high school, he still has a great deal of potential and will only continue get better."
Alcombrack spent the last three seasons in the Indians' minor-league system, where he accumulated a .233 career batting average with 26 doubles, eight home runs and 45 RBI. His best offensive stint came in 2007 with the Gulf Coast Indians, when he hit .244 with 10 doubles, seven home runs and 23 RBI in 38 games.
First-year Beach Bums manager Gregg Langbehn utilized an inside track in order to sign Alcombrack.
"I knew his agent, Terry Bross, who pitched with the Mets, from when I was in their minor league system," said Langbehn. "When Jason (Wuerfel) was talking to me about Robby and mentioned that Terry Bross was his agent, I gave Terry a call and talked to him about 15-minutes before we even talked about Robby, but that happened to give us the inside track."
"I saw Robby play in spring training the last couple of years. He was a midseason all-star in the New York Penn League last year, so, aside from being a former high-pick, he has plenty of ability both offensively and defensively," Langbehn finished.
A graduate of Bear River High School in California, Alcombrack signed with the Indians directly out of high school. He opened both the 2006 and 2007 seasons in the Gulf Coast League before ending the 2006 season with Burlington of the Appalachian League and the 2007 season with Lake County of the South Atlantic League. Alcombrack spent last season with the Mahoning Valley Scappers of the New York Penn League where he spent time at first and third base as well as behind the plate.
The right-handed hitter batted .248 in 2008 with 11 doubles, a home run and 13 RBI in 49 games with the Snappers.
The 6-0, 205-pounder was born in Kirkland, Wash.
