Beach Bums Surge Late, Wild Things Fall 14-8

TRAVERSE CITY, MI-The Traverse City Beach Bums rallied from five runs down to defeat The Washington Wild Things on Tuesday, August 4 at Wuerfel Park by a final score of 14-8. Steve Messner was charged with the mound loss for the Wild Things, while Chuck Ghysels earned the victory for the Beach Bums.

A pair of singles by Danny Poma and Matt Ford started the hitting out for the Wild Things in the first inning. A Scott Kalamar fielder's choice was able to bring Poma in for the go-ahead 1-0 run. Traverse City answered with a run in the bottom of the first on a Jose Varges groundout, scoring Jay Austin from third.

Washington wasted no time regaining the lead in the top of the second. Singles by Andrew Heck and Austin Wobrock set up an RBI single by Poma to give the Wild Things a 2-1 lead. An RBI single and error by the Traverse City defense brought home Poma and Wobrock to extend the lead to 4-1. First baseman Sam Mende improved the lead to 6-1 in the fourth with an RBI double.

The Beach Bums cut the lead to four on an RBI single by Brandon Jacobs in the fifth inning. Washington answered with a run in the seventh, extending the lead to 7-2. Traverse City began the comeback in the seventh inning, scoring five runs to tie the game at 7-7. The Beach Bums completed the comeback in the eighth inning, with RBI singles from Yazy Arbelo, Kendall Patrick, and Alex Tomasovich. The Wild Things cut the deficit to six in the final inning on an RBI double by Austin Wobrock, but could not overcome the 14-8 deficit.
