Rockford Aviators News Release
Avon, OHIO - The Rockford Aviators dropped their first contest in Avon to the Lake Erie Crushers 5-1 Tuesday before rallying behind a 2-hit shutout performance by newcomer David Diaz to salvage a win in the doubleheader. Diaz, in his pro debut, racked up 6 Ks and did not allow a Crusher into scoring position in helping the Aves to their 2nd victory over Lake Erie this season.
Tony Rizzotti took the hill for the Aves in Game 1 and fell behind early after a 2-out, bases loaded double dropped inside the left field line for Vazquez to give the Crushers a 3-0 lead.
The Aviator bats managed just 2 hits and 3 base runners in the contest. Devon Rodriguez would drive in their only run of the game with a single in the 4th.
Diaz took the mound in Game 2 and was dominant from the get-go. The Fort Worth native did not allow a base runner until the 5th, struck out the side in the 4th, and shut down a Crusher offense that had gone off for 10 hits in Game 1.
Michael Hur helped give the Aves the lead with a 2-RBI triple in the 2nd. Elijah Trail would follow with a 2-run homer in the third to make it 4-0. That was all Diaz, who allowed just 4 men to reach the whole way, would need. His 7-inning complete game helped the Aves notch their 39th victory of the year.
The two teams meet tomorrow once again at All Pro Freight Stadium at 7:05 ET. LHP Payton Baskette is expected to start for the Aviators.
