Southern Illinois Miners News Release

Marion, Ill. (August 4, 2015) - The Southern Illinois Miners fell behind early, then tied the game with a two-out RBI in the third inning, but the Schaumburg Boomers took control with a four-run fifth inning and did not look back from there, defeating the Miners 6-1 on Tuesday night at Boomers Stadium in the first game of a three-game series and a six-game road trip for Southern Illinois.

After the Boomers got an unearned run in the first off Matt Bywater (8-4), the Miners got a two-out rally to tie the game in the third. Aaron Gates was able to get on with an 11-pitch at-bat against Schaumburg starter Raul Jacobson (2-2), and Michael Earley lifted a single to center field that kicked off the glove of a diving Alexi Colon, scoring Gates all the way from first base to tie the score at 1-1.

But Bywater and the Miners ran into trouble in the fifth. After a single, double and walk loaded the bases with no one out, Ty Nelson hit a bases-clearing double to right to give Schaumburg a 4-1 lead. An RBI single by Willi Martin later in the frame made the score 5-1, with the Boomers eventually scoring another run in the seventh for the final margin.

Bywater struck out seven to raise his league-leading total to 116 on the season, and the Miners got two hits apiece from Earley and Frank Martinez, as well as a third-inning single by Steve Marino that extended his hitting streak to seven in a row, but could not muster up enough offense on a night where the visitors did not get a single baserunner with less than two outs in any inning until the ninth. The Boomers' rookie right-hander Jacobson lasted seven and two-thirds innings, fanning six and allowing just one run on five hits to get the win.

The Miners will look to even the series on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. with Adam Lopez starting on the mound opposite Boomers righty Taylor Thurber.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2014 Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions.
