Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
WUERFEL PARK - The Traverse City Beach Bums are excited to announce the return of pitchers Corey Alexander and Chuck Ghysels. Both are right-handed pitchers who joined the team during the 2014 season.
Alexander returns to the Beach Bums after making his pro debut late in the 2014 season. He made his first appearance Aug. 2 at Florence and threw two scoreless innings. Over the final month of the season he appeared in eight games, over powering batters with 18 strikeouts over 16.1 innings pitched. He finished 0-0 with a 3.86 ERA.
"Looking forward to having Corey come back and compete for a spot in the bullpen. Hopefully he can fit into the long reliever role and be in a position to compete for starting rotation spot if it comes up."
Alexander pitched collegiately at Siena Heights (MI) University in 2012 and was the ace of the team's staff. He led the Saints in wins (eight), ERA (1.96), complete games (seven), innings pitched (105.2) and strikeouts (65) during his senior season. Alexander was also awarded a Gold Glove his senior year with a 1.000 fielding percentage.
Over his entire four years at Siena Heights he had an 18-14 record, 3.86 ERA. He finished his career third on the school's career wins list, fourth in strikeouts and fourth in ERA.
Ghysels signed with the team last June and appeared in 36 games out of the bullpen. He posted a 2-3 record, 2.93 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 42 innings pitched
"He'll be our closer or back of the bullpen guy for sure" Rohn said of Ghysels.
The 25 year-old started 2014 with the Normal Cornbelters appearing in five games. Ghysels had previously spent two seasons in the Toronto Blue Jays system. He made his pro debut in 2012 making 25 appearances for the Gulf Coast Blue Jays. He also had two outings with the high-A Dunedin (FL) Blue Jays of the Florida State League.
In 2013 he juggled time at three different levels within the Blue Jays' system. He made a single, scoreless relief appearance for Dunedin. Ghysels also made 14 appearances with three saves for the low-A Lansing Lugnuts of the Midwest League. However, his most success came with the SS-A Vancouver (BC) Canadians of the Northwest League. There, he had 11 saves in 28 outings while posting a 2.15 ERA.
The native of Springboro, OH was signed by Toronto in 2012 as a non-drafted free agent after pitching for the University of Dayton, Lincoln Trail College and the University of Maryland. He had previously been drafted in the 36th round of the 2010 MLB Amateur Draft by Cincinnati but didn't sign.
