Beach Bums Edge Rascals to Record Series Sweep

O'FALLON, MO - The Traverse City Beach Bums held off the River City Rascals to capture their seventh straight win and sweep the road series with a 4-3 decision at T.R. Hughes Ballpark on Thursday night.

Traverse City scored all four runs in the top of the second inning to take control of the contest early against River City starter Scott Fogelson. Kyle Maunus led off the frame with a single and went to second on a Brad Miller hit. Patrick Pperry walked to load the bases and Jeff Brown gave the Beach Bums a 2-0 lead with a double into left-center. Brad Roblin followed with a two-run single to account for the scoring.

The Rascals came back in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead in half against Beach Bums All-Star David Nathanson. Andrew Sweet drew a leadoff walk and was along for the ride as Jeff Miller connected on his team leading ninth homer of the season, clearing the fence in right-center. River City pulled within 4-3 by scoring in the bottom of the fourth as Greg Stone drove home Will Basom with a sacrifice fly.

David Nathanson threw 5.2 innings to pick up his league leading ninth victory of the season. Pete McEneaney and Ted Gjeldum bridged the gap to closer Jeff Williams, who tallied his eighth save of the season. Williams struck out Jeff Miller to end the game after walking consecutive hitters with two outs.

The Beach Bums were outhit in the contest, but recorded the win. Brad Roblin was the Beach Bums Player of the Game, finishing 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and the game-winning hit. Jeff Brown also had a pair of hits in the contest.

The Beach Bums (29-19) will open a three-game series at Southern Illinois tomorrow night in an 8:05 pm contest. LHP Weston Curles (1-0, 3.60) will make his second start for Traverse City with RHP Chris Allen (1-0, 0.00) taking the ball for the Miners. The game can be heard live on The Fox FM beginning with the Labatt Blue On Deck Show at 7:45 pm.
