Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

Three Traverse City relief pitchers held the Gateway Grizzlies down for the duration of the game and Nick Batkoski provided the offense driving in four runs as the Traverse City Beach Bums took their second straight from the Grizzlies 6-4.

Gateway grabbed the early 1-0 lead as the Grizzlies loaded the bases with no one out in the first inning. However, David LeMieux was able to get Rob Wirth to ground into a double play with Kevin House coming in to score.

The Beach Bums took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. With runners on first and second, Bick Batkoski drove a Scott Nicholson pitch deep over the right field fence for his first homerun as a Beach Bum and giving TC a 3-1 lead.

Traverse City expanded the lead to 4-1 with an RBI single by Mike Reese driving in Justin Holmes who had singled earlier in the inning. Gateway pulled back to 4-2 on an RBI single by Wirth, plating Greg Issacson who had led off the inning with a double.

Gateway pulled even in the sixth with a pair of runs off Beach Bums' reliever Jon Barchus. Traverse City made sure the tie was short lived as TC plated a pair in the bottom half of the inning. With Al Roach on second, Kevin White delivered a single to right, his first hit with runners in scoring position this season to make it 5-4. Kevin Gergel then singled to move White to second. The single did not go for naught as the next batter Batkoski delivered his second big hit of the game, an RBI single making it 6-4 Beach Bums.

Normally a relief pitcher, David LeMieux tossed five innings allowing six hits and two runs. Jon Barchus picked up the win pitching the sixth inning. The rest of the game belonged to Paul Mezzetta who was outstanding through the final three innings picking up his first professional save, striking out the side in the ninth.

Traverse City goes for their first series sweep tomorrow. Shaun Parker (1-1) will pitch for the Beach Bums against Steve Soja (0-1) for Gateway. It is seat cushion night at the ballpark as the first 1,000 fans at the Wuerfel Park will receive a free seat cushion courtesy of the Traverse City Beach Bums. Game time is 7:05 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by calling 943-0100, logging on to www.traversecitybeachbums.com or by stopping by the Wuerfel Park box office from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
