Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich.-Ryan Gehring, a charter member of the Traverse City Beach Bums pitching staff, has been traded to the Joliet Jackhammers, completing a 2008 trade with the Northern League team which brought right-handed pitcher David Nathanson to Traverse City before last season, for a player to be named later.
"Ryan was a huge part of the Beach Bums' organization for the past three seasons and we are sad to see him go," said Beach Bums director of baseball operations Jason Wuerfel.
Gehring, a 2008 Frontier League All-Star, had been with the Beach Bums since their inaugural 2006 season, when he held a 2.98 ERA with a 7-5 record in 18 starts. In 2007, the southpaw threw a team-high 124 innings, striking out 76 batters. Last season he held a 2.71 ERA in 126 innings pitched with a team -high 69 strikeouts.
"Ryan had a terrific run in Traverse City and we knew we could count on him taking the mound every fifth day and giving us everything he had. He is a fearless competitor and I am confident he will continue to have success in the Northern League," finished Wuerfel.
Gehring was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in 2005 and spent that summer with Elizabethtown of the Appalachian League, striking out 31 batters in 30 innings of work. He pitched collegiately at the University of Illinois-Chicago, where he struck out 188 opponents in 46 appearances, earning a 24-12 career mark.
A native of Burlington, Wis., Gehring was the 2001 Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association's High School Player of the Year at Burlington Catholic High School.
