Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, MI. The Traverse City Beach Bums did not have to look very far for their new manager. Today the Beach Bums announced they have promoted Jon Cahill, last season's hitting coach, to fill the position left vacated by Jeff Isom, who took a job managing the Helena Brewers in the Milwaukee Brewers' farm system.

"As soon as [2006 Beach Bums Manager] Jeff Isom was hired to manage in the Brewers' organization, applications and resumes started pouring in," said Beach Bums managing member John Wuerfel. "But the more we looked over the qualifications and experience of the applicants, the more we realized that Cahill was the best man for the job."

Cahill was the 2005 Frontier League Coach of the Year with the Ohio Valley Redcoats before being hired as the Beach Bums hitting coach in 2006. Last summer Cahill helped the Beach Bums set a league record for wins by a first year franchise with 57, which also ranked as the sixth highest win total in the 14 year history of the Frontier League. As the Defensive Coach Cahill proudly points out the Beach Bums boasted the best team fielding percentage in the Frontier League.

Following a standout career at UMass-Lowell, Cahill played in the Angels system for two seasons, making it as high as AA with the Arkansas Travelers. Cahill played for the Washington Wild Things in 2003 and 2004, hitting a combined .280 in 181 games. One of the best at his position defensively, Cahill turned in a .964 fielding percentage with the Wild Things in two seasons at shortstop, including being part of an infield that turned a then league record 89 double plays in 2004.

Cahill escaped the weekend storms in his home state of Massachusetts, arriving late Friday night at Traverse City for an extended interview with the Wuerfels. When asked how he felt shortly after accepting the position, Cahill said, "I feel very fortunate to be the Manager of the Traverse City Beach Bums. This is a wonderful opportunity for me to succeed and establish myself as a manager. I look at the other managers around the league and I feel blessed to share the same title. I am very excited to get to work and give the fans of Traverse City a great show every night."

The Traverse City Beach Bums are a member of the Frontier League, a 12-team Independent Professional Baseball League established in 1993. The Beach Bums play a 96 game schedule with 51 home games between late May and early September. The 2007 schedule is available online by logging on to www.traversecitybeachbums.com.
