Baz, Pen Lead Pirates to 2-0 Shutout Win

The Bristol Pirates combined to shutout the Greeneville Reds on Wednesday evening with an 11-0 victory to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Shane Baz, the 2017 first round draft pick for Pittsburgh, had his longest professional outing in his 2018 debut, throwing five shutout innings while allowing only four hits and three walks. Baz also had one strikeout on his way to his first career win. Argenis Romano came on in relief of Baz for three innings of shutout ball, allowing only three hits while striking out five. Luis Diaz pitched a perfect ninth inning to secure the Pirates win, recording his first two strikeouts of the season in the process.

The Pirates had six players record multi-hit performances in the win, with left fielder Eddy Vizcaino leading the team with a game-high three hits. Vizcaino finished 3-for-4 in his 2018 debut with a double, a walk, two RBI and a run scored. Mikell Granberry finished 2-for-3 with a double, two walks and a game-high three runs scored, and he now leads the Pirates with a .429 average and 1.493 OPS over the first two games of the season.

The Pirates (2-0) will return to Greeneville on Thursday night for the series finale against the Reds. Oliver Garcia will get the start for Bristol, with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. Garcia made 11 starts in the Dominican Summer League last season, posting a 2-2 record and 2.15 ERA with 46 strikeouts over 54 1/3 innings. Following Thursday's game, the Pirates will return to Bristol for their home opener on Friday at 7 p.m. when they host the Elizabethton Twins at Boyce Cox Field.
