Baysox Use Big Fifth to Win Second Straight

Manchester, NH - The Bowie Baysox (25-34) scored four times in the fifth inning and beat the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (22-37) 9-5 on Friday night in a game delayed twice due to rain.

Rhyne Hughes got the scoring started in the top of the first inning with a two-out solo home run to give the Baysox a 1-0 lead.

In the second inning, the Baysox added another run. They loaded up the bases on singles by Zelous Wheeler and Brian Ward and a walk by Steven Bumbry. Travis Adair then hit a sacrifice fly that made the score 2-0.

The Fisher Cats got a run back in the bottom half of the inning. The leadoff batter, Gabe Jacobo, reached on a throwing error by Wheeler that allowed him to get to second. Brian Bocock then singled to center to knock him in and cut the lead to 2-1.

With one out in the fourth inning, Ward hit a double to right that knocked in Wheeler from second base and extended the lead to 3-1.

In the fifth inning, the Baysox struck for four runs with two outs. With two runners on, Robbie Widlansky singled to center to knock in the first run of the inning. Wheeler followed with another RBI single and then after Widlansky scored on a wild pitch, Bumbry knocked in the final run of the inning to make the score 7-1.

The Fishers Cats immediately answered back in with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. They loaded up the bases with no one out and then Mike McDade cleared them with a three-run double. The very next batter, Sean Ochinko, then followed with another double to cut the lead to 7-5.

In the top of the ninth the Baysox added a couple insurance runs. Hughes singled and Brandon Waring doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Widlansky followed with his second RBI of the game that knocked in Hughes. Wheeler then grounded out to third, but on the play Waring scored to extend the lead to 9-5.

Jake Pettit started the game, but did not factor into the decision after throwing just two innings due to a rain delay.

Kyler Newby threw two shutout innings in relief and picked up his third win of the season.

Pedro Viola finished off the game by throwing the final three innings without allowing a run or a hit to earn his first save of the season.

Yohan Pino got the loss for New Hampshire. He went 2.2 innings and allowed two runs on three hits with one strikeout and one walk.

Tomorrow in the second game of the series RHP Sean Gleason (0-1, 6.04) will make his second start of the season against RHP Chad Jenkins (2-5, 6.13).

The Baysox are in the midst of a six-game road trip. They will return home on Tuesday, June 12 for a six-game homestand that will include fireworks, a pint glass giveaway, and their annual Legends of Wrestling Night featuring Bret "The Hitman" Hart.
