Chesapeake Baysox News Release
Trenton and Bowie had a combined eight runs in their previous two games. Sunday afternoon it would be the Thunder who would live up to their name, as they put up six runs in the first frame en route to a 15-3 shellacking of the Baysox.
The Baysox defense didn't fare any better with a season-high six fielding errors.
Carlos Jan was the lone bright star for the home team through the first seven innings, fanning six batters in 2.2 IP, including five straight Ks for outs.
Trenton rocketed out to a 6-0 lead off Baysox starter Brian Finch who walked three batters, and gave up four hits, including a grand slam to former Yankee Felix Escalona before the first out was even recorded.
Trenton never backed down and feasted off the Baysox bullpen, which made an early entrance in the second inning. The Thunder scored at least one run in every inning except for the 5th before the Baysox could even score off Thunder starter Steven White.
SS Gera Alvarez was all over the diamond on Sunday afternoon with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, a run in the 7th and even pitched the top of the 9th.
For the 'Sox first run of the game, Alvarez led off the 7th with a double to right field. Tripper Johnson, who was 2-for-4, bumped Alvarez to third with a single and Cory Keylor plated Alvarez on a fielder's choice.
Trenton kept pounding away and got two more in the top of the 8th off Jan, all unearned, for a 14-1 lead. Despite the surmounting deficit, the Baysox would answer back. With two on and one out, Gera Alvarez plated Mario Delgado, who had walked, on a single into center field.
Tripper Johnson scored the 'Sox final run of the afternoon with a solo shot off reliever Francisco Butto in the bottom of the 9th.
3,172 fans (and their beloved dogs) were on hand as the Baysox participated in their second "Bark in the Park" event sponsored by Crunchies. The team is now 0-2 on "Bark in the Park" events this season.
ON DECK: After a disappointing end to the homestand the Baysox hit the road for a seven game road trip at Altoona and Akron. Altoona is tops in the Eastern League and Akron is not far behind in second place.
