BaySox drop double header to Rock Cats

June 4, 2006 - Eastern League (EL1)
Chesapeake Baysox News Release

Following a two-day stoppage of play because of inclement weather, the Baysox finally took the field today for the first time on their road trip that began Friday at New Britain. The Baysox opened up their series with the Rock Cats today with a double-header, leaving one game of the series to be made up at a later time.

The Baysox got off to a rough start in game one, dropping the first end of the twin bill, 3-1. The Baysox got on the board first in the fifth inning, thanks to a Rayner Bautista solo shot in the sixth, giving the Baysox a 1-0 edge.

Baysox starter Richard Stahl pitched relatively well, failing to give up a run until the sixth inning. Stahl surrendered three earned runs in the inning, including two homeruns to Daniel Matienzo (a two-run shot) and Alex Romero (a solo shot) in back-to-back at bats. Stahl was then replaced by Nick McCurdy who finished out the game for the visitors, giving up only one hit, with one K in two-thirds of an inning. Unfortunately for the Baysox Bautista's solo shot was the only hit in the game for the Baysox, as their record dropped to four games below .500 before the second end of the twin bill. Rock Cats Starter Matt Garza remained undefeated on the season, bettering his record to (3-0), with the one-hit effort.

The second game didn't go much better for Bowie as they fell 1-0, to the Rock Cats. The Baysox only managed to compile two hits in game in the second game, both off of the bat of Tony Alvarez. Alvarez singled in both the fourth and seventh innings for the Baysox, but that was all of the offensive production Bowie could muster, as Rock Cats starter Glen Perkins collected his second win of the year, throwing a complete game two-hitter while recording 10 K's, while only surrendering one walk.

Baysox starter Matt Bruback was battered in the loss. Bruback gave up seven hits and the lone run of the game, while walking two in 3.1 innings. The Rock Cats lone run came in the third inning when Daniel Matienzo singled in Trent Oeltjen on a line drive to right. Bruback did strike out four Rock Cats in the game, before being replaced in the contest by Baysox reliever Brian Forystek. Forystek was pretty solid in relief, giving up only one hit and one walk, with 3 K's in 2.2 innings of relief. Unfortunately the Baysox failed to record a hit for the rest of the game, besides Alvarez' single in the seventh. With the losses the Baysox fall to 25-30 in fifth place in the Eastern League's Southern Division.
