Erie, Pennsylvania - The Erie BayHawks squared off against the Canton Charge on Saturday night for the second game of the back-to-back series. Canton controlled most of the game and was able to withstand a fourth quarter push by the BayHawks before finishing Erie off by a final score of 107-96.
The Charge (12-7) opened the game on a 14-2 run in the first four minutes of action before Erie (4-13) managed to cut the deficit to just seven at the end of the first quarter. Canton's Jorge Gutierrez poured in 11 of his team-high 19 points in the frame.
Erie closed the gap to just four on a Mustafa Shakur three-pointer with 8:39 left in the half. The two teams traded runs for the remainder of the stanza before Canton took a 55-48 lead into the break.
Canton used the last four minutes of the third quarter to build a 21 point advantage as the two teams headed to the final twelve minutes. The BayHawks stepped up their defensive effort and went on a 17-4 run in the fourth quarter to draw them within 10 points with four minutes remaining. Canton played well enough down the stretch to hold their lead and defeat the BayHawks 107-96.
Shakur paced Erie with 19 points and five rebounds. He was aided by C.J. Leslie's 15 point effort off the bench and 15 points from Justin Brownlee. Canton had six players finish in double-figures, led by Gutierrez's 19. Shane Edwards (17), Gilbert Brown (16) and Kevin Jones (16) also had solid scoring nights for the Charge.
Erie will travel to Delaware to face the 87ers on Monday night while Canton will head to Springfield for a date with the Armor on Friday. The BayHawks return home on Wednesday night to face the Armor at the Erie Insurance Arena.
