
BayHawks Drop 87ers in Morning Game

Erie, Pennsylvania - The Erie BayHawks got their first win of the season over the Delaware 87ers this morning in front of a sold out crowd at Erie Insurance Arena, 100-97.
Erie jumped out to a 22-5 lead with 6:26 to go in the first behind six of six team shooting from three. Delaware answered with a 7-0 run to pull the score to 19-13, forcing a Bill Peterson timeout with 5:29 to go in the quarter. The 87ers closed the gap after by trailing as many as 17 in the first. Earl Clark put up 14 points in the quarter and brought the score within seven, 30-23.
Delaware got within four midway through the second quarter but the BayHawks pulled away again after nearly three minutes of scoreless play and closed the first half leading, 49-40. Melvin Ejim and Jordan Sibert each tallied 15 points for the BayHawks. Erie shot 56% from three. Sibert was four of seven from behind the arc while Ejim was two of three.
The third quarter held even play with the BayHawks pulling out to a 16-point lead with 4:22 remaining in the quarter. Delaware went on 6-0 run to get the score back within seven.
Delaware closed the gap and took their first lead of the game with 4:05 remaining but Erie responded with seven Ejim points to retake the lead 97-96. After a Kabongo layup, the referees reviewed a crucial out-of-bounds play with 38.7 seconds to play. The officials determined the ball belonged to Delaware with one second remaining on the shot clock. Thompson had a good look on the inbound but missed the layup. Ejim came down the floor and missed the floater giving the 87ers a final possession but Kilpatrick lost control of the ball into Ejim's hands. Erie used their advancement to get the ball to Myck Kabongo, who was fouled by David Laury. Kabongo knocked down one of two free throws. Delaware in turn used their advancement with .2 seconds remaining but Clark was unable to get the shot off before time expired, sealing the victory for the BayHawks.
Clark had a game-high 28 points and 14 rebounds on 11 of 17 shooting from the field. Russ Smith added 22 points and seven assists. In his first game back with Delaware after a stint with the Denver Nuggets, Sean Kilpatrick had 16 points off the bench.
Ejim continued his strong play with a 24-point, 13 rebound double-double. Sibert added 19 points. Kabongo had 15 points and seven assists. Egwu added a double-double of his own with 12 points and 15 rebounds.
