BayBears No-Hit Biscuits in 1-0 Win

April 28, 2018 - Southern League (SL1)
Montgomery Biscuits News Release

MONTGOMERY, Ala.. - The Biscuits (8-15) were no-hit in a combined, three-pitcher effort by the Mobile BayBears (11-11), who took game three of the series in historic fashion, 1-0, on Saturday night at Riverwalk Stadium. The no-hitter was the first ever thrown against the Biscuits, and just the second no-no in BayBears history.

Griffin Canning (1-0) started the game for the visitors, and went five hitless innings for his first Double-A win, walking six and striking out one. The Biscuits best chance in the game came in the third inning when they walked four times against the 21-year-old righty, but failed to scratch across a run.

Biscuits knuckleballer J.D. Martin (0-4) was superb in his fifth start for the club going 6.1 innings and allowing just one run on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts. The lone blemish of the night for the 35-year-old came in the fifth when Matt Thaiss launched a solo home run over the right field wall, which proved to be all the BayBears would need.

Matt Custred came on to relieve Canning in the sixth and tossed three more hitless innings, and Ryan Clark came on to close out the game and complete the combined no-hitter in the ninth, striking out pinch hitter Ryan Boldt swinging to end the game.

The no-hitter was just the second in BayBears history, and the first since another combined effort involving Archie Bradley, Matt Gorgen, Derek Eitel, Willy Paredes, and Jake Barrett against Huntsville on August 14, 2013. The no-hitter was also just the second in Riverwalk Stadium history, with the first coming-somewhat ironicall-10 days after the aforementioned first in BayBears history on August 24, 2013 when Victor Mateo threw one for the Biscuits against the Jacksonville Suns.

The Biscuits will try to rebound and win their first series of the season on Sunday afternoon when Edaur Lopez (1-2) takes on Jose Suarez (1-0) at 2:05 PM when it will be Autism & Disability Friendly Night Supporting Easter Seals of Central Alabama at Riverwalk Stadium.
