Mississippi Braves News Release
PEARL, MS - The Mississippi Braves defeated the Jackson Generals 4-3 on Saturday night at Trustmark Park. For Mississippi, Friday night's victory was their second consecutive victory against the league leading Generals.
Jackson struck first and took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when Jose Vinicio scored from third base on a wild pitch by Mississippi starter, Touki Toussaint.
After failing to score runs in the first three innings, Mississippi responded in the bottom of the fourth inning by taking a 2-1 lead. Mississippi's two runs came courtesy of a sharp line drive, bases clearing double to center field by Travis Demeritte. Tyler Neslony and Alex Jackson both scored on Demeritte's double.
Mississippi added two more runs to their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, making the score 4-1. Neslony started things off by reaching base safely on a fielding error by Jackson Generals shortstop, Jose Vinicio. Alay Lago also scored on the error and Neslony advanced to second base.
Jackson would then follow with a hard ground ball single to left field, allowing Neslony to score easily from second base.
Much like the previous night, the Generals refused to go away quietly. Trailing 4-1 in the top of the ninth inning, the Generals offense rallied to score two runs off of M-Braves relief pitcher, Josh Graham who entered the game in the top of the eighth inning in relief of Toussaint, making the score 4-3.
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, M-Braves closer, Jacob Webb entered the game with the tying run on second base. Webb proved to be clutch as usual as he retired the lone batter that he faced, earning his fifth save of the season and preserving a one run victory for the M-Braves.
Although the M-Braves offense produced four runs over the course of the game, not to be overlooked is the pitching performance by Toussaint. In 7.0 innings pitched, the right-hander managed to keep the potent Generals offense at bay, allowing just three hits, and one run which was earned. Toussaint did not walk a batter in his Saturday night outing and he also recorded seven strikeouts on the night. The outing was the longest and most effective by a Braves starter this season.
Toussaint (1-1, 4.44) earned his first win of the season for the M-Braves while southpaw, Alex Young (3-1, 3.33) suffered the loss for the Generals. Graham was credited with a hold, his second of the season and Webb earned the save.
Mississippi and Jackson will meet for the fourth time on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at Trustmark Park. RHP Wes Parsons (0-1, 1.59) has been named the Sunday starter for the M-Braves. Parsons counterpart will be Generals right-hander, Taylor Widener (0-0, 3.38).
Promotions for Sunday afternoon's contest include: Puppers In The Park sponsored by Hollywood Feed, Kids Run the Bases sponsored by Launch Trampoline Park and Mugshots Family Fest Sunday sponsored by Mugshots Grill & Bar.
