June 9, 2018 - Southern League (SL1)
Jackson Generals News Release
MOBILE, AL. - The Jackson Generals showed up with a bang to start their series against the Mobile BayBears on Friday night, but it did not last. Despite a good effort on the hill from starter Justin Donatella, the Generals (33-28) dropped a 4-3 decision to Mobile (34-26) at Hank Aaron Stadium, keeping Jackson in a tie for first place with Chattanooga in the Southern League's North Division.
Jose Vinicio and Kevin Medrano made sure Mobile knew the Generals were there to play by going back to back with a home run and a double in the first inning. Rudy Flores didn't want to be left out of the action and added a line drive to right field that brought Medrano around to score and gave Jackson a 2-0 lead over the BayBears. Medrano, the newly nominated 2018 Southern League All Star, wasn't done yet, and he started off the third inning with another double, his 18th of the season. Jason Morozowski would later hit a grounder up the middle that would get past Mobile second baseman Connor Justus and bring in Medrano to score the final Generals run of the game. Mobile would start their fight back in the bottom of the third and continue to claw into the fourth, with the final bite coming in the bottom of the seventh. A line drive to left field from Jared Walsh would score Jose Rojas, giving Mobile the 4-3 lead & their final run of the game.
Right-hander Justin Donatella was locked in from the start, throwing five strong innings. Donatella allowed seven hits, three runs and two walks while striking out four of his 25 faced batters. Donatella would take on three of the earned runs Mobile was able to get back before Bud Jeter would come in for the sixth inning. Jeter (0-1, 0.82 ERA) would be charged with the loss, throwing two innings with one hit, one walk and two strike outs. Newly added Rafael Pujols would come in for the eighth inning, only facing 4 batters and giving up one walk.
The Generals' offense was going from the start, as Jose Vinicio hit his second home run of the season off the second pitch of the game. Southern League All Stars Rudy Flores and Kevin Medrano would combine to make the score 2-0 at the end of the first inning with a double and an RBI to right field. Bats were quiet until the top of the third inning when Medrano would hit another double and be brought in to score by Jason Morozowski. Jackson's Daniel Robertson would come in as a pinch hitter in the top of the ninth inning and ground a bunt down the third base line to give the Generals a fighting chance to tie the game, but nothing would come of it.
