Rio Grande Valley Dorados News Release
Hidalgo, Texas --- The Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings (3-2) dampened the home-opener for the Rio Grande Valley Dorados (1-3) with a 50-30 victory Saturday night at the Dodge Arena.
Manwel Talbert hauled in three TDs from Steve Panella, who finished 20-for-31 with six TDs in his first start of the season. Chavis McCollister pulled home two TDs, including a 30-yard reception with 4:30 left in the second quarter that put the Wings up 19-13. They never relinquished the lead.
The Dorados got as close as three points after Brian Hazelwood booted a 29-yard field goal to make it 19-16 with 53 seconds left in the first half and later pulled with in 10 points after an Eddie Jackson seven-yard TD reception to make it 40-30 with 10 seconds remaining in the third.
Rio pressured with midway through the final stanza, but a costly fumble on the Bossier 23 by QB Travis Cole allowed the Battle Wings to eat away at the clock. The RGV defense forced a 31-yard field goal attempt by David Carlton, which missed wide left, and the Dorados regained possession on the Rio 20. Cole connected with Anthony Chambers on a 14-yard reception to put the Dorados within striking distance, but Cole failed to connect with Eddie Jackson on four consecutive plays.
Bossier regained possession and used just two plays, concluding with a 36-yard TD reception by McCollister, to close things out.
The Dorados host the Corpus Christi Sharks next Saturday night at the Dodge Arena. Kick off is set for 7:30 p.m. The first 1000 fans through the turnstiles receive mini footballs.
