Battle Creek Battle Jacks News Release
Battle Creek, MI-The Battle Jacks came into today's game against the Pit Spitters just 1-4 in their last five games. That would have to change if they wanted a shot at the first half title. They did just that, winning decisively, 7-4. These two always play close games, but today's game was all Battle Jacks. The 7-4 final score makes the game look a lot closer than it actually was. Battle Creek led wire to wire, not giving the Pit Spitters any hope of a comeback.
It started with the offense as they put up a run in six of the eight innings they went to the plate. Billy Hancock was the first to drive in a run. He plated Bobby Nichols with a single. Then in the second it was Fisher Pyatt who reached on a single, coming around to score on a passed ball. In the third, a Joey Grabanski sac fly scored Hancock after he lead the inning off with a triple. The fourth inning saw another run cross. This time Patrick Mills batted in a run, while the bases were loaded. It was Dillon Kark who started the rally and scored. In the fifth, the streak was broken, as the Battle Jacks scored not one, but two runs. Aaron Dolney and Jace Matkin both reach base to start the inning and were later rewarded. Kark and Pyatt drove both of them in with singles. They would score their final run in the sixth. It was a Dolney single and Matkin triple that did it.
On the pitching side of things it was Keegan Batka and Adam Berghorst who were absolutely dealing. Batka had absolute control of his entire repertoire. He fanned four over seven innings, allowing just one earned run. He gave up just five hits, as well. Berghorst came in in relief and once he settled down, was shoving. The first four batters he faced, but Billy Hancock threw out two runners on the base path. After that, Berghorst retired four of the next five batters he faced, K-ing two of them.
It's a much needed win for the Battle Jacks as they maintain their position in second place. They'll need to keep it up as they head to Mequon, Wisconsin tomorrow to take on the Lakeshore Chinooks. First pitch is scheduled for 7:35 pm EST.
