
Battle for First Place: Round 1 - Wolves Victorious 3-1

Watertown Wolves News Release
It was a battle for 1st place at the Watertown Municipal Arena between the Watertown Wolves and the visiting Danbury Whalers.
Justin MacDonald gave Watertown the 1-up on Danbury with a goal assisted by Chad Bennett and Dylan O'Neil at 14 minutes into the period. The tension between the teams started to become apparent when Watertown's Corey Evelyn would go down from a hard check. The Wolves would return the favor to the Whaler's Ilya Solarev a few minutes later as he also received a hard check that took a few moments to get up from. Danbury out shot Watertown 15-6, but Watertown would hold the lead on the scoreboard 0-1.
Watertown would extend their lead 3-and-a-half minutes into the 2nd period when Justin Alonzo scores on assists from Lucas LaBelle and Cody Dion. Halfway through the period Watertown's Kris McCarthy and Danury's Sean Mataak each received 2 minutes for roughing on a short spar. The Wolves added another goal 2 minutes later by Justin MacDonald with assistance from Aaron Atwell and Colby Spooner. The Whalers would not allow the game to end in a shutout as Tim Richter scored at the 5-minute mark with the aid of Sean Mataak and Mike Zannella. Wolf Justin MacDonald and Whaler Kristaps Nimanis would get into it at 3:30 in the period to each receive 2-minute roughing penalties. Watertown's Matt Wray would simultaneously get a 2-minute hooking and a 10-min misconduct that led to his departure for the rest of the period. Danbury would double-up Watertown on the shot count 22-11 and Watertown town held on to their lead at the end of the period 1-3.
The final period of the game saw no additional goals. Both teams were successful in killing off all the power plays in the game. Justin MacDonald received the 1st Star of the game. Jo St. Pierre received the second and Tim Richter received the 3rd. Watertown's 1-3 victory now has them on top of the League standings by 1%.
Watertown's next home game will be against the Danbury Whalers at the Watertown Municipal Arena on Wednesday, December 31st. The puck drops at 5:05.
