 Charleston Battery

Battery Travel to Indy for Saturday Clash

April 12, 2024 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Charleston Battery News Release

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Battery's busy April slate continues with an away match against Indy Eleven on Sat., April 13. Kickoff at Carroll Stadium is set for 7 p.m. ET and the match will air on ESPN+.

Charleston and Indy square off for the first time since the Battery eliminated the Indiana outfit in last year's playoffs in a lopsided 5-0 result. Arturo Rodriguez (1, 2A) and Nick Markanich (1G, 1A) were among the top performers in the rout.

The Battery (3W-0L-3D, 12pts) head to Circle City after knocking off the previous conference leaders, Louisville City FC, 3-2 at Patriots Point. Charleston were propelled by MD Myers' instant equalizer and Nick Markanich's brace to win the rematch of last season's Eastern Conference Final. The victory extended the Battery's unbeaten start to the season to six matches and saw Charleston replace Louisville atop the league table.

Indy (1W-3L-1D, 4pts) also enter Saturday's contest having recently played Louisville, but were on the opposite end of things, losing 5-3 in Kentucky. Indy turned in an admirable showing against a tough Louisville side, led by Jack Blake's brace, but a comeback proved to be a bridge too far that afternoon.

Looking at the Eastern Conference standings, the Battery sit in first and Indy are in 10th.

Storylines of the Match

Busy Battery - Saturday's match will be the third game in eight days for the Battery. It is also the fifth road match out of seven to open the 2024 campaign for the Black and Yellow. Charleston opened the month on the road against Rhode Island last Saturday (0-0 draw) before defeating Louisville on Tuesday.

A Familiar Adversary - Potentially lining up for Indy on Saturday will be a familiar face in forward Augi Williams. The striker was the Battery's top goalscorer the previous two seasons before making a move to Indy this past offseason. It would mark the first time Williams faces his former suitors since that move.

Searching for Success in Indy - While the Battery won the last meeting, it's Indy who hold an advantage in the all-time series with a 4W-3L-2D record against Charleston. Additionally, all three wins have come in South Carolina. The Battery are still looking to grab their first victory over Indy away from home.

Maintain Momentum - Charleston have been playing as well as any team in the league to start the year. The Black and Yellow lead the league in possession and touches in the opposition's box, are tied for the league lead in shutouts, and are second in goals scored. The Battery will look to keep that form amid the busy schedule lately of matches and travel.

Fouls Afoot? - Indy are second in the league for most yellow cards and have the fifth-most fouls conceded, and the Battery have the most fouls conceded. Given the intensity that both teams play with, fans can expect a spicy contest come Saturday.

Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes - Prior to Saturday's fixture, the Indy squad underwent a series of changes via a player swap with Miami FC. Indy sent defender Daniel Barbir and midfielder Roberto Molina to Miami in exchange for defender Benjamin Ofeimu and midfielder Ben Mines. Both Ofeimu and Mines will be available on Saturday.
