Rhode Island FC News Release
Rhode Island FC and Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC are set to take the field at Beirne Stadium on Saturday in search of their first win of the 2024 USL Championship season. Both clubs are hungry for goals after being held to 0-0 stalemate draws in front of their respective home crowds last week. For Rhode Island FC (0W-1L-3D), a deadlock with 2023 USL runners-up Charleston Battery came as a much-needed clean sheet, the first in club history, after giving up four second-half goals to Tampa Bay Rowdies on March 30. On top of a career-high six saves from goalkeeper Jackson Lee, including a low reflex save deep into second half stoppage time, a major defensive effort helped bring the Ocean State club across the finish line without conceding for the first time this season, despite going down to 10 men with 20 minutes to play. Lee's first professional clean sheet earned him Man of the Match honors and a first-ever selection to the USL Championship Team of the Week. If RIFC can take advantage of its chances, the team's newfound defensive stability will give a good foundation towards three points.
For Pittsburgh, Bob Lilley's squad felt like they could have pulled away with more than a point last weekend after outshooting Tampa Bay Rowdies 16-6. The shooting mark was a season-high that accounted for nearly half of its 40 total efforts in 2024. Despite being shut out for the third time in four matches to open the season, Pittsburgh's (0W-3L-1D) draw against Tampa Bay showcased the club's effective attacking ability. The club struggled to find the frame throughout the match, however, only putting three of its 16 shots on target to force just two saves from the Rowdies' goalkeeper. Pittsburgh showed promise in its buildup vs. the Rowdies with 13 of its shots coming from inside the 18-yard box. The 2023 Players' Shield winners will look to improve their execution on the finishing touch against Rhode Island FC in order to collect all three points for the first time this season.
