Battery Travel North for Harrisburg Rematch

July 3, 2014 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Charleston Battery News Release

Charleston Battery players and staff will spend their 4th of July on the bus to Harrisburg, PA, for their second 2014 match against the Harrisburg City Islanders at 6 p.m. onSaturday, July 5,.The game will be broadcast locally on Sports Radio 1450 AM and via www.charlestonbattery.com.

It's an important away match for the Battery (4-6-4), who have slumped to a 2-5-1 road record in the first half of the 2014 season and dropped to 10th place in the USL PRO table last weekend when their last match (against Richmond on June 27) wasrescheduled because of an electrical storm.

The club's best awayperformance of the season came on May 2 at Harrisburg's Skyline Sports Complex, when the Battery earned its first USL PRO win of the yearwith a 4-0 shutout of the City Islanders (3-7-4). That match remains the Battery's largest scoring output and largest winning margin of the USL PRO season.

Harrisburg enters the contest in 12th place with 13 points on 14 matches, a tally that trails the Battery's by three. The City Islanders are coming off a 1-2-2 June, and held resurgent Charlotte to a 1-1 draw at Skyline on Friday. Charleston played only two matches last month, going 1-1-0 with a 3-0 home win against the LA Galaxy II and a 1-3 road loss at Charlotte on June 21.

The clubs split their two-game series in 2013, with each earning on win on their opponent's home grounds. In 2014, the league's unbalanced scheduling matched the two up for three games -- the first two in Pennsylvania, and the one return match at Blackbaud Stadium on Friday, Sept. 5. That's the Battery's final regular season match, and with the team chasing a playoff spot, it could be critical.

The Battery enter the game with one of the league's top defenses, a highly ranked goalkeeper in Odisnel Cooper, and four players -- current Battery menAmadou Sanyang, Haviel Cordoves and Dane Kelly, plus departed Vancouver Whitecaps forward Omar Salgado -- tied for the regular-season scoring lead with two goals apiece. Harrrisburg has struggled to keep shots out of its net, surrendering 22 against 15 scored -- the same offensive production as the Battery.Forwards Morgan Langley (4) and Clesio Bauque (3) lead the City Islanders in goals scored.

Coach Bill Becher has been at the helm in Harrisburg since 2004.

As always, the Battery's official Away Game Watch Party will be hosted by Molly Darcy's Irish Pub at 235 E. Bay St., just around the corner from the Charleston Market.
