Charleston Battery News Release
Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery's five game win streak was snapped by the Vancouver Whitecaps Wednesday Night at Blackbaud Stadium. Vancouver won 2-0 on a rain-soaked night with goals from Jason Jordan and substitute forward Nicholas Addlery. Charleston (5-2-2, 17 points) remains in first place in the USL First Division, Vancouver (5-2-1, 16 points) improves to second position.
Charleston created the first chance of the game in the 8th minute after striker Randi Patterson was fouled at the edge of the box. Midfielder Osvaldo Alonso took the ensuing free-kick but his effort sailed high.
One minute later Vancouver went ahead after some good work down the right flank by the right-back, Lyle Martin. Martin evaded Mike Richardson's challenge and slipped a ball into the near post to forward Jason Jordan who finished with a neat first-time shot.
The Battery fought back and Patterson put winger Chris Williams in behind the Vancouver defense in the 14th minute with a good diagonal ball. Williams took a touch then hit a hard right-footed shot that was turned over the bar by goalkeeper Jay Nolly.
Charleston enjoyed the majority of possession but Vancouver were content to soak up the pressure and wait for chances to counter-attack. In the 48th minute midfielder Martin Nash tested Battery goalkeeper Keith Wiggans from just outside the box but Wiggans managed to palm the ball around the post for a corner.
In the 70th minute the Battery almost leveled after Williams attempted to cross from the right side. The ball came off his boot awkwardly and angled towards goal but Nolly backpedaled and just managed to tip the ball over the top.
Vancouver put the game beyond doubt in the 75th minute with a good finish from Nicholas Addlery. Addlery was played in behind from the right-side, he carried the ball into the box, rounded Wiggans and finished neatly with a right-footed strike.
Charleston is back at home versus the Montreal Impact on Saturday June 7 for its next match; gates open at 6:30 PM with kick off set for 7:30 PM.
