First round Open Cup Match-up set

May 28, 2008 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Seattle Sounders News Release

The Seattle Sounders will play the Arizona Sahuaros of the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA) at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona, on June 10th at 6:30 pm (PST) in first round play of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

With cup play kicking off for 2008, Seattle will be looking to repeat the success they had last year in the Open Cup when they advanced to the semi-finals, beating two MLS clubs in route, before losing 2-1 to Dallas FC in extra time. The run to the semi-finals was the deepest the Sounders have ever advanced in the tournament.

Sebastien Le Toux led the competition with five goals, which was the highest goal tally in the tournament since Abdul Thompson Conteh of DC United scored five in 2001.

The Arizona Sahuaros qualified for the Open Cup by advancing to the USASA Region IV open tournament final; a game they played and won against Hollywood United.

The US Open Cup is a single elimination tournament that dates back to 1914. It is the oldest annual team tournament in U.S. sports. The tournament is open to all teams affiliated with the United States Soccer Federation (USSF).

The winner of the match-up on June 10th will play the winner between the Harrisburg City Islanders and the Yakima Reds, on June 24th.
