Batter Up for Stewpot at Trustmark Park

Pearl, MS - Batter Up for Stewpot, the annual charity softball game that matches the Media Giants against Barbour's Bombers, will be held at Trustmark Park on Thursday, June 4th at 5 pm. The M-Braves will take on the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx at 7 pm that night. Funds raised help the non-profit agency serve meals to needy families in downtown Jackson. It will be Thirsty Thursday at Trustmark Park and fans that purchase tickets to the M-Braves game will also receive admission to the Batter Up for Stewpot game.

Batter Up for Stewpot has raised more than $40,000 in the last two years - all contributed to the non-profit agency that serves hundreds of meals daily.

The Media Giants consists of media members from local TV, radio and newspapers as well as former media members from the Jackson-Metro area. They will be coached by Mississippi College head baseball coach Brian Owens. Barbour's Bombers consists of gubernatorial supporters, family members and state agency employees. Brad Rogers, the Republican nominee for Mayor in Pearl, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

Major sponsors for the 2009 Batter Up for Stewpot charity softball game include Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi, AT&T, BankPlus and the Jackson law firm of Brunini, Grantham, Grower & Hewes. The game will feature a raffle for an array of items such as restaurant gift certificates, riding lessons at Providence Hill Farm, a three-month membership to the Baptist Healthplex, college baseball jerseys and Gail Pittman artwork.

Barbour's Bombers holds a 3-1 advantage in the series. For the first three year's of the game's existence, the series was known as Homerun for Habitat. The teams raised $75,000 to help build homes in the Jackson-Metro area.

"We got clobbered by the Bombers last year, but the event was a huge success for Stewpot," said organizer Andy Kanengiser, a Media Giants player. "Batter Up for Stewpot 2009 looks like another homerun at the home of the 2008 Southern League Champions."

Regulars on the Media Giants roster include WAPT-16 news anchor Scott Simmons, radio newsman Randy Bell and Clarion-Ledger photographer Joe Ellis.

Fans are encouraged to bring cans of food to the game to boost Stewpot's efforts. They are also encouraged to sign up at the game to become Stewpot volunteers. There are now 7,000 Stewpot volunteers in metro Jackson, but good help is always welcome.

Stewpot's Executive Director Frank Spencer and Governor Haley Barbour played on the same Yazoo City High School baseball team in the early 1960s. Barbour was a standout catcher and later became an Ole Miss Rebel who some mention as a possible 2012 Republican Party presidential contender. Barbour may play or coach in the game.
